Bob Lord (football chairman)

Bob Lord (1914 – 1981) was an English businessman and football administrator, most notably known for his long and controversial tenure as chairman of Burnley Football Club.

Lord became chairman of Burnley in 1955 and held the position until his death in 1981. During his time, Burnley enjoyed significant success, winning the First Division title in 1960 and reaching the quarter-finals of the European Cup the following season. He was known for his shrewd financial management, ensuring the club's stability and avoiding debt.

However, Lord's reign was also marked by controversy. He was a staunch traditionalist and became a symbol of resistance to the growing commercialisation of football. He famously banned the sale of alcohol within Turf Moor, Burnley's stadium, and was critical of the increasing influence of television on the game. His views often clashed with those of other club chairmen and the Football Association.

Lord's conservative policies were seen by some as hindering Burnley's progress in later years. After the league title, the club steadily declined and was eventually relegated from the First Division in 1971. Despite this, he remained a powerful figure in English football until his death. His legacy is complex, remembered both for his achievements in bringing success to Burnley and for his uncompromising and often divisive views on the future of the sport.
