John Osborne (Montserrat politician)

John Osborne (born c. 1936, died December 17, 2011) was a politician from Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. He served as the Chief Minister of Montserrat for three terms: from 1978 to 1991, from 2001 to 2006, and briefly in 2009.

Osborne was the founder and leader of the People's Liberation Movement (PLM). His political career was characterized by a focus on economic development and diversification, including promoting tourism and offshore financial services. During his time in office, Montserrat experienced significant economic growth, particularly in the 1980s. He was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and sometimes controversial policies aimed at attracting foreign investment.

His later years were marked by political challenges and a decline in popularity. He lost the 2006 general election to Lowell Lewis and the Montserrat Democratic Party (MDP). He briefly returned to power in 2009 after his PLM formed a coalition government, but this government collapsed after only a few months.

Osborne's legacy in Montserrat is complex, with some crediting him with modernizing the economy and others criticizing his leadership style and financial decisions.
