LGA 1366

LGA 1366 (Land Grid Array 1366) is an Intel CPU socket used for high-end desktop and entry-level server processors. It was released in November 2008 and superseded the LGA 775 socket. LGA 1366 supports Intel's Core i7 (Nehalem microarchitecture) and some Xeon 5500 and 5600 series processors.

Key features and characteristics of the LGA 1366 socket include:

  • Pin Count: The "1366" in the name refers to the 1366 pins on the socket that make contact with the processor's pads.
  • Triple-Channel Memory: LGA 1366 motherboards typically support triple-channel DDR3 memory, providing increased memory bandwidth compared to previous dual-channel architectures.
  • QPI (QuickPath Interconnect): This socket utilizes Intel's QPI, which is a high-speed interconnect between the CPU and the chipset (Northbridge equivalent) or other CPUs in multi-processor systems. QPI replaced the Front Side Bus (FSB) used in previous Intel architectures.
  • Socket Lifespan: LGA 1366 had a relatively short lifespan, being replaced by the LGA 1156 socket for mainstream desktop processors and subsequently succeeded by other sockets for high-end and server platforms.
  • Processor Compatibility: It's important to note that processors designed for LGA 1366 are not compatible with other CPU sockets, and vice versa. The specific processor model must be compatible with the socket for proper operation.
