Nilgiri-class frigate (2019)
The Nilgiri-class frigates are a series of stealth guided-missile frigates being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in India. They are a derivative of the Project 17A program, also known as the Shivalik-class frigates. The primary role of the Nilgiri-class is anti-submarine warfare (ASW), but they are also equipped to handle air defense and anti-surface warfare threats.
The design incorporates stealth features to reduce the ship's radar cross-section, making it more difficult to detect. These features include a streamlined hull design and radar-absorbent coatings.
The frigates are equipped with a variety of sensors and weapons, including surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, and guns. They also carry helicopters for ASW and search and rescue operations.
The first ship of the class, INS Nilgiri, was launched in 2019. Subsequent ships are planned to be commissioned in the coming years, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy's capabilities. The Nilgiri-class represents a significant step forward in indigenous warship design and construction for India.
