Cat Island (Rodrigues)

Cat Island, also known locally as Île aux Chats, is a small islet situated off the south coast of Rodrigues, an autonomous outer island of Mauritius. It is one of several smaller islands surrounding Rodrigues, and lies approximately 1.5 kilometers southwest of the main island.

The island is primarily known for its unique ecological environment and historical significance. While not confirmed, the origin of the name "Cat Island" is believed to derive from either the presence of cat-like animals (likely introduced) in the past, or from a misinterpretation of another animal's name.

Cat Island is uninhabited and plays a vital role in the conservation of endemic flora and fauna. The islet serves as a nesting site for seabirds. The surrounding waters are used for fishing by local Rodriguans.

The island's remote location and challenging accessibility have contributed to the preservation of its natural state. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the delicate ecosystem from invasive species and other environmental threats. Tourism to the island is restricted to minimize disturbance to the wildlife and vegetation.
