1919 (band)
1919 were a British post-punk/gothic rock band formed in Bradford, England in 1980. The band’s original lineup consisted of Mark Tighe (vocals), Nick Hiles (guitar), Steve Smith (bass), and Paul Hoddy (drums).
Known for their dark and intense sound, 1919 drew influences from early punk rock and incorporated elements of gothic rock, characterized by melancholic melodies, driving rhythms, and Tighe’s distinctive vocals. Their lyrics often explored themes of social alienation, despair, and political unrest, reflecting the socio-economic climate of early 1980s Britain.
1919 released several singles and EPs in the early to mid-1980s, gaining a following on the UK independent music scene. Notable releases include the single "Repulsion" and the Death Note EP. They toured extensively, supporting bands such as The Sisters of Mercy and Alien Sex Fiend, further solidifying their presence within the growing gothic subculture.
The band dissolved in the mid-1980s.
In 2014, 1919 reformed with a revised lineup featuring original members Mark Tighe and Steve Smith, alongside new musicians. The reformed band has since released new material and toured extensively, revisiting their earlier work while also exploring new sonic territory. They continue to be recognized as an influential band in the development of the post-punk and gothic rock genres.
