Avocet (album)
Avocet is a 2010 studio album by British folk guitarist and composer Bert Jansch. It is Jansch's final studio album released before his death in 2011. The album is entirely instrumental and is inspired by the avocet, a wading bird species known for its elegant appearance and distinctive upturned beak.
The album consists of five extended pieces, each evoking the bird's natural habitat and movements through musical landscapes. Jansch's signature fingerstyle guitar technique is prominent, creating intricate and melodic compositions. The album features contributions from bassist Loren Jansch (Bert's wife) and percussionist Terence Doran.
Avocet received critical acclaim upon its release, praised for its evocative atmosphere, Jansch's virtuosic playing, and its introspective and meditative qualities. It is often considered a high point in Jansch's later career and a fitting final statement from a highly influential guitarist. The album's artwork features a painting of an avocet. The tracks are named after various locations associated with the bird.
