VMR-152

VMR-152, or Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 152, is a United States Marine Corps fighter attack squadron consisting of F-35B Lightning II STOVL (Short Take-Off/Vertical Landing) aircraft. The squadron is based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG-12) and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW).

Originally commissioned as VMF-152 in 1942 flying F4F Wildcats, the squadron has a long history of combat service, participating in World War II in the Pacific Theater, the Korean War, and various operations throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Over the years, the squadron transitioned through several aircraft platforms, including the F4U Corsair, the F-9F Panther, the F-4 Phantom II, and the F/A-18 Hornet, before transitioning to the F-35B.

VMR-152's primary mission is to conduct air operations in support of Fleet Marine Forces. This includes close air support, air interdiction, offensive and defensive counter air, and armed reconnaissance. The squadron also provides support to other Marine Corps and joint service units as required. The transition to the F-35B has enhanced the squadron's capabilities, providing advanced sensor technology, increased situational awareness, and a greater range of ordnance options.
