Russian submarine Krasnoyarsk (K-571)

The Krasnoyarsk (K-571) is a Project 949A Antey-class (Oscar II) nuclear-powered guided missile submarine of the Russian Navy. The submarine is named after the city of Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Overview

The Antey-class submarines are designed to attack enemy aircraft carrier battle groups and other surface vessels with long-range anti-ship missiles. They are among the largest submarines ever built. The Krasnoyarsk is equipped with 24 P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) anti-ship missiles, as well as torpedoes and anti-submarine missiles.

Construction and Commissioning

The Krasnoyarsk was laid down at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk on 26 July 1983. Construction faced delays due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The submarine was eventually launched on 22 May 1993 and commissioned into the Russian Navy in December 1995.

Operational History

The Krasnoyarsk has served in the Russian Pacific Fleet. Specific details of its operational history are largely classified, but the submarine has participated in numerous naval exercises and patrols in the Pacific Ocean.

Modernization

In the 2020s, the Krasnoyarsk underwent a major modernization program to extend its service life and enhance its capabilities. This modernization likely included upgrades to its electronics, sonar, and weaponry, potentially including the integration of newer missile systems. The modernization aims to keep the submarine operational well into the 21st century.
