Satyr (band)
Satyr is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1991. The band was founded by Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven, who remains its sole constant member and primary songwriter. Initially, Satyr played a more traditional, second-wave black metal style, characterized by fast tempos, raw production, and dark, occult themes. Their early albums, such as Dark Medieval Times (1993) and The Shadowthrone (1994), are considered significant contributions to the genre.
Over time, Satyr has evolved its sound, incorporating elements from various musical styles, including folk music, classical music, and avant-garde metal. This experimentation began to be apparent in albums like Nemesis Divina (1996), often considered a landmark album in black metal history, and continued on subsequent releases.
The band is known for its distinctive atmosphere, created by Satyr's guttural vocals, aggressive guitar riffs, and the integration of keyboards and other instruments to create a layered and epic soundscape. Themes explored in their music include mythology, nature, philosophy, and anti-Christian sentiments.
Satyr has released several critically acclaimed albums throughout their career, including Rebel Extravaganza (1999), Volcano (2002), and Now, Diabolical (2006). Their later albums, such as The Age of Nero (2008) and Satyrical (2013), have continued to demonstrate their willingness to experiment with new sounds and approaches. The band has toured extensively worldwide and is widely recognized as one of the most influential and innovative black metal bands to emerge from the Norwegian scene.
