Lanark South (federal electoral district)

Lanark South was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that existed from 1867 to 1903. It was created as part of the British North America Act, 1867, which established the initial electoral districts for the first Canadian federal election.

The riding encompassed the southern portion of Lanark County in eastern Ontario. It was defined geographically, encompassing the townships and municipalities within the specified area of the county.

During its existence, Lanark South elected a single Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of Canada through the first-past-the-post electoral system. The electoral district participated in the federal elections held between 1867 and 1900.

Notable MPs who represented Lanark South included individuals prominent in local and national politics during the late 19th century. Detailed biographical information on these individuals is available in historical parliamentary records.

In 1903, Lanark South was abolished and its territory was redistributed into other neighbouring electoral districts as part of a broader redistribution of federal ridings in Ontario. This redistribution aimed to reflect population changes and ensure more equitable representation in the House of Commons. The specific reasons for the redistribution involving Lanark South can be found in parliamentary documents and historical records related to electoral boundary adjustments.
