St. Nicholas Hotel (New York City)

The St. Nicholas Hotel was a luxury hotel located in New York City during the 19th century. Opened in 1853 at 515-527 Broadway, between Spring and Broome Streets, it quickly became one of the city's most prestigious and opulent hotels. It was known for its lavish interiors, including frescoed ceilings, marble staircases, and gas lighting, as well as for its advanced amenities for the time, such as steam heating and passenger elevators.

The hotel catered to wealthy travelers, politicians, and prominent figures, playing host to numerous social events and serving as a center of New York City's elite social scene. It was considered a rival to other grand hotels of the era, such as the Metropolitan Hotel.

During the American Civil War, the St. Nicholas Hotel was a gathering place for Union officers and politicians. After the war, it continued to be a popular destination, but by the late 19th century, newer hotels began to surpass it in terms of modernity and luxury. The St. Nicholas Hotel was eventually demolished in 1883. Today, the site is occupied by commercial buildings. The St. Nicholas Bank of New York, located nearby, took its name from the former hotel.
