Walasiho

Walasiho is a small settlement and historical site located in Isiolo County, Kenya. It is primarily known for its association with World War II, specifically as a significant defensive position and prisoner of war (POW) camp.

During the war, Walasiho was strategically important due to its location along a key supply route. The British colonial forces established a POW camp there to house Italian prisoners captured during the East African Campaign. The harsh conditions and remote location made Walasiho a difficult place for both prisoners and guards.

Today, Walasiho is a quiet community with remnants of its wartime past still visible. The former POW camp is now in ruins, but its history is remembered locally. The area is occasionally visited by historians and those interested in World War II history in East Africa. The local population is mainly pastoralist, and agriculture is practiced on a small scale.

While not a major tourist destination, Walasiho offers a glimpse into a relatively obscure but significant chapter of World War II history in Kenya.
