Cao Yu (cinematographer)
Cao Yu (曹郁, born 15 August 1974) is a Chinese cinematographer, known for his work on both Chinese and international films. He is a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese cinema, recognized for his artistic vision and technical skill in visual storytelling.
Cao Yu graduated from the Beijing Film Academy's Cinematography Department in 1997. He quickly established himself with his work on independent and art-house films before transitioning to larger-scale productions.
His notable works include:
- Kekexili: Mountain Patrol (2004), directed by Lu Chuan, which brought him international recognition for its stark and beautiful depiction of the Tibetan landscape.
- City of Life and Death (2009), also directed by Lu Chuan, which explores the Nanjing Massacre. This film garnered Cao Yu numerous awards, including the Golden Shell for Best Cinematography at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
