Salisbury Island (Western Australia)
Salisbury Island is a small island located off the coast of Western Australia, within the Recherche Archipelago. It lies approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) south-east of Esperance. The island is composed primarily of granite and is part of the larger Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve, managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Access to Salisbury Island is generally restricted to protect its fragile ecosystem and significant birdlife. The island serves as an important breeding site for various seabird species, including flesh-footed shearwaters, little penguins and various terns. It is also known to support populations of reptiles and small mammals. Due to its sensitive environment and remote location, research and monitoring activities are periodically conducted to assess the health of its flora and fauna.
