Kortrijk
Kortrijk (French: Courtrai; West Flemish: Kortryk) is a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders, in the Flemish Region. It is the capital and largest city of the arrondissement of Kortrijk.
Kortrijk is situated on the Leie (Lys) river, 25 km (16 miles) southwest of Ghent and 45 km (28 miles) west of Brussels. The municipality comprises the city of Kortrijk proper and the former municipalities of Aalbeke, Bellegem, Bissegem, Heule, Kooigem, Marke, and Rollegem, which were merged into Kortrijk in 1977.
Historically, Kortrijk is known for its linen and textile industry. It was also the site of the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, a significant event in Flemish history. Today, Kortrijk is an important regional center with a diversified economy, including manufacturing, service industries, and education.
Notable landmarks include the Beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Broel Towers, and the Grote Markt (Grand Market Square) with its historic buildings. The city is also home to several museums and educational institutions, including VIVES University of Applied Sciences and KU Leuven Kulak Kortrijk Campus.
