Lee Wen
Lee Wen (1957 – 2019) was a Singaporean multidisciplinary artist and cultural activist. He was a prominent figure in Singapore's contemporary art scene, known for his performance art, installation art, and social commentary.
Lee Wen's work often explored themes of identity, social injustice, and the relationship between the individual and society. He was a founding member of The Artists Village, a collective that played a pivotal role in the development of alternative and experimental art practices in Singapore during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Perhaps his most recognizable work is the "Yellow Man" series, which began in 1994. For this series, Lee Wen would cover his body entirely in yellow paint, using the color as a metaphor to explore issues of race, identity, and societal othering within the context of Singapore and beyond. He utilized his "Yellow Man" persona in various performances and interventions in public spaces.
Beyond his individual artistic practice, Lee Wen was a strong advocate for freedom of expression and artistic autonomy. He was involved in numerous initiatives to promote art education and create platforms for emerging artists. His contributions to the development of Singaporean contemporary art and his advocacy for artistic freedom have made him a significant figure in Southeast Asian art history.
