Patrick Cullen (artist)
Patrick Cullen (born 1949) is an Irish expressionist painter known for his vibrant and often turbulent depictions of urban landscapes, particularly those of Dublin and London. His work is characterised by a thick impasto technique, strong colors, and a dynamic sense of movement.
Cullen studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. He draws inspiration from the Fauvist and German Expressionist movements, particularly the work of artists like Maurice de Vlaminck and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. However, Cullen's style is distinctly his own, reflecting a deep engagement with the specific environments he portrays.
His paintings often capture the energy and grittiness of city life, focusing on architectural details, street scenes, and the interactions of people within these spaces. While his landscapes can be representational, they are filtered through an expressive and subjective lens, conveying a particular mood or atmosphere.
Cullen has exhibited extensively both in Ireland and internationally, and his work is held in numerous public and private collections. He is considered one of Ireland's leading contemporary landscape painters.
