Hans Schneider (mathematician)

Hans Schneider (November 24, 1927 – November 2, 2014) was a German-born American mathematician known for his contributions to linear algebra, matrix theory, and combinatorics.

Schneider received his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1950 under the supervision of Alexander Aitken. He then emigrated to the United States, where he held positions at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Birkbeck College, London, and finally, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he spent the majority of his career.

His research interests were broad, encompassing areas such as nonnegative matrices, the algebraic theory of matrices, and graph theory. He is particularly well-regarded for his work on generalized inverses of matrices and for his contributions to the theory of M-matrices.

Schneider was an editor of several mathematical journals, including Linear Algebra and its Applications. He also co-authored several books, making significant contributions to mathematical literature. He was recognized for his expertise and influence in the field of linear algebra through numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He mentored many doctoral students who have gone on to make their own contributions to mathematics.
