Daniel de Superville (1696–1773)

Daniel de Superville (also known as Daniel de Superville the Younger) was a Prussian physician and theologian, primarily known for his medical practice and contributions to religious thought within the French Huguenot community. Born in Rotterdam in 1696 to Daniel de Superville the Elder, a prominent Huguenot pastor, he continued a family tradition of service to the Reformed Church, though his own career leaned more heavily into medicine.

He studied medicine and practiced as a physician in Rotterdam before relocating to Berlin around 1726. In Berlin, he served as a physician to the French colony, providing medical care and becoming a respected figure within the community. He also held the position of Consistorial Councillor for the French churches in Prussia.

De Superville authored several theological works, reflecting a blend of medical observation and religious interpretation. His writings explored themes of divine providence, the relationship between body and soul, and the role of faith in healing. He was known for his pragmatic approach to religious questions, often seeking to reconcile faith with reason and empirical observation. He died in Berlin in 1773. His writings provide valuable insights into the intellectual and religious climate of the Huguenot diaspora in 18th-century Europe.
