Moving Pictures (band)
Moving Pictures were an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1978. They are best known for their 1981 single "What About Me?", which reached number one in Australia and achieved international success, particularly in the United States and Canada.
The band's founding members included Alex Smith (vocals), Garry Frost (guitar, keyboards), Charlie Cole (guitar), Andrew Thompson (bass guitar), and Kevin Bennett (drums). Initial lineups saw various members come and go before settling on this core group.
Moving Pictures released their debut album, Days of Innocence, in 1981. The album spawned several other singles besides "What About Me?", including "Winners" and "Never Enough." Days of Innocence achieved significant commercial success in Australia, reaching the top ten on the album charts.
Following the success of Days of Innocence, the band toured extensively both domestically and internationally. They struggled to replicate their initial success with subsequent releases, however. Their second album, Matinee, released in 1983, did not achieve the same level of commercial impact.
Moving Pictures disbanded in the mid-1980s. Members have occasionally reunited for special performances. "What About Me?" remains a popular and frequently played song on Australian radio and continues to be associated with the early 1980s Australian rock music scene. The song has also been covered by numerous artists over the years, further cementing its place in Australian popular culture. Garry Frost went on to form the band 1927.
