Moon gate
A moon gate is a circular architectural opening in a garden wall, traditionally found in Chinese gardens. It serves as a pedestrian gateway and a distinctive decorative element.
Characteristics:
- Shape: The defining characteristic is its perfectly round opening, resembling the full moon.
- Material: Often constructed from brick, stone, or a combination of materials.
- Purpose: While functional as an entryway, moon gates are also symbolic, representing wholeness, unity, and good fortune. Walking through a moon gate is thought to bring good luck. They frame views within the garden, adding to its aesthetic appeal and creating a sense of mystery and invitation.
- Location: Typically found in walled gardens, particularly those designed with traditional Chinese landscape principles. They can also be incorporated into modern garden designs seeking an Eastern influence.
- Variations: Though traditionally circular, some variations may have slightly flattened or arched tops. The surrounding wall may be simple or highly decorated with carvings or embellishments.
