Duke Paul Frederick of Mecklenburg (1882–1904)
Duke Paul Frederick of Mecklenburg (Paul Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich) was a member of the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He was born on May 12, 1882, in Schwerin, Germany, and died on May 17, 1904, in Schwerin. He was the son of Duke Frederick Francis III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia. He was a younger brother of Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Queen consort of King Christian X of Denmark, and of Frederick Francis IV, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
Duke Paul Frederick was considered a shy and retiring individual. He remained unmarried and without issue. His early death at the age of 22 is often attributed to a suicide following a period of depression, although the official cause of death was initially reported as illness. The circumstances surrounding his death remain somewhat unclear and have been the subject of speculation. He was buried in the Schwerin Cathedral. His death preceded the end of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1918.
