Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines (film)

Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines is a 1934 American romantic comedy film directed by Lloyd Bacon and starring Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler. It is based on the 1902 play of the same name by Clyde Fitch, which itself was inspired by the career of Captain Jinks of the New York National Guard.

The film tells the story of Captain Jinks (Powell), a naive and somewhat bumbling officer in the Horse Marines. He falls in love with Aurelie Trentoni (Keeler), a celebrated opera singer who has just arrived in New York from Europe. Jinks's attempts to court Aurelie are complicated by his inexperience, the machinations of a rival suitor, and Aurelie's own sophisticated nature. The film features several musical numbers and focuses on the clash between Jinks's innocent charm and Aurelie's worldly sophistication. The supporting cast includes Robert Barrat and Helen Ware. The film is notable for being one of the earlier roles for Dick Powell where he began to transition from his "song and dance man" image.
