Anthony Jephson (died 1794)
Anthony Jephson (died 1794) was an Irish playwright and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament for Granard in the Irish House of Commons from 1776 to 1783, and subsequently for Mallow from 1783 until his death in 1794.
Jephson is primarily remembered for his dramatic works. His most successful play was Braganza, a tragedy produced by Richard Brinsley Sheridan at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1775. Braganza achieved considerable success, running for several nights and solidifying Jephson's reputation as a playwright. Other plays by Jephson include The Count of Narbonne, also a tragedy, and Two Strings to Your Bow, a comedy. While these later works did not achieve the same level of popularity as Braganza, they were performed in London and contributed to the theatrical landscape of the late 18th century.
