USS Begor

The USS Begor (APD-127) was a United States Navy high-speed transport ship in commission from 1945 to 1946. Originally laid down as a Buckley-class destroyer escort, DE-666, she was reclassified as an APD (high-speed transport) on 17 July 1944 and renamed USS Begor on 6 December 1944.

Begor was launched on 22 December 1944 by Dravo Corporation, Neville Island, Pennsylvania; sponsored by Mrs. J. T. Begor, mother of Seaman First Class Begor; and commissioned on 24 July 1945, Lieutenant Commander J. W. Leverton, USNR, in command.

After shakedown, USS Begor departed Norfolk, Virginia, on 10 September 1945 and proceeded via the Panama Canal and San Diego, California, to the Western Pacific. Arriving at Okinawa on 26 October 1945, she embarked units of the 6th Marine Division and transported them to Tsingtao, China. For the next few months, she remained in the Far East, transporting occupation troops in China and making voyages between Japan and the Philippines.

Departing Yokosuka, Japan, on 20 February 1946, USS Begor sailed via Pearl Harbor and the Panama Canal, arriving at New Orleans, Louisiana, on 14 April 1946. She was decommissioned on 16 July 1946 at Green Cove Springs, Florida, and placed in reserve.

On 1 November 1966, USS Begor was struck from the Navy List. On 21 May 1968, she was sold for scrapping to Southern Scrap Material Company, Ltd.

USS Begor received one battle star for World War II service.
