Xi Gang

Xi Gang (郗鑒) (269-340), courtesy name Daoshi (道徽), was a prominent general and official of the Jin Dynasty (266-420) of China. He is best known for his role in quelling rebellions and defending the dynasty against various threats.

Born in Gaoping (高平, present-day Jining, Shandong), Xi Gang initially served under Sima Teng, a powerful prince during the chaotic War of the Eight Princes. Recognizing the imminent collapse of Sima Teng's faction, Xi Gang shrewdly distanced himself, preserving his life and future prospects.

Later, Xi Gang joined the service of Emperor Yuan of Jin, Sima Rui, and played a key role in consolidating the dynasty's power in the south. He successfully suppressed rebellions led by Wang Dun and Su Jun, earning him considerable prestige and influence at court. His military acumen and unwavering loyalty were highly valued by the emperor.

Xi Gang held various important positions throughout his career, including General Who Guards the North (鎮北將軍) and Governor of Xu Province (徐州刺史). He was known for his integrity, competence, and dedication to the Jin Dynasty. He advocated for good governance and the selection of capable officials.

He is also remembered for his discerning eye. When Emperor Yuan sought a suitable husband for his daughter, Princess Ningkang, Xi Gang instructed his subordinates to present themselves. He ultimately chose Wang Xizhi, later to become one of the most celebrated calligraphers in Chinese history, not for his appearance or status, but for his composure and demeanor. This anecdote highlights Xi Gang's ability to see beyond superficial qualities and recognize true potential.

Upon his death, Xi Gang was granted the posthumous title of Duke Yuan (元公). His sons, Xi Tan and Xi Chao, also became prominent officials in the Jin Dynasty. His legacy is that of a loyal and capable servant of the Jin Dynasty, instrumental in stabilizing the realm during a turbulent period.
