Amrapali (film)
Amrapali is a 1966 Hindi historical drama film directed by Lekh Tandon, starring Vyjayanthimala and Sunil Dutt in the lead roles. The film is based on the life of Amrapali (also known as Ambapali), a famed courtesan of Vaishali in ancient India (around 500 BC).
The film portrays Amrapali's life from her early days as a beautiful woman desired by many, to her eventual transformation after encountering Gautama Buddha. The narrative focuses on the conflict between King Ajatashatru of Magadha, who desires Amrapali, and the democratic republic of Vaishali. Ajatashatru's ambition to conquer Vaishali and possess Amrapali drives the plot.
Vyjayanthimala's performance as Amrapali is widely regarded as one of her finest. The film's music, composed by Shankar-Jaikishan, with lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra, was also very popular. Songs such as "Tumhe Yaad Hoga Kabhi Hum Mile The" and "Jao Re Jao Re Jogiya" remain classics.
Although Amrapali was India's official submission to the 39th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film, it was not nominated. The film is remembered for its historical setting, costumes, music, and Vyjayanthimala's portrayal of the iconic courtesan.
