Azuma, Gunma (Agatsuma)

Azuma is a geographic region within Gunma Prefecture, Japan, specifically referring to the area along the Agatsuma River (Agatsumagawa). The name "Azuma" in this context is closely associated with the Agatsuma region and sometimes used interchangeably, although Agatsuma encompasses a wider area including multiple towns and villages. The Azuma area is known for its mountainous terrain, hot springs (onsen), and agricultural production, particularly vegetables and fruit. The development of resort areas has also contributed to the regional economy. The towns and villages within the general Agatsuma area include, but are not limited to, Kusatsu, Naganohara, Tsumagoi, Higashiagatsuma, and Nakanojo. The area is popular for tourism due to its natural beauty and onsen resorts.
