SS Rastrello

The SS Rastrello was an Italian cargo ship and passenger liner built in 1931. Operated by the Società Italiana di Servizi Marittimi (SITMAR), she primarily served routes connecting Italy with the Middle East, North Africa, and East Africa.

During World War II, the Rastrello was requisitioned by the Italian Royal Navy and used as a transport vessel, primarily for troop movements and supplying Italian forces in North Africa. She played a role in the logistical efforts to support the Italian war effort in the region.

The Rastrello's service was cut short when she was sunk by Allied forces. On November 6, 1941, she was torpedoed and sunk by the British submarine HMS Ursula near Benghazi, Libya. The sinking resulted in significant loss of life, including soldiers and crew.

Following the war, the wreck of the Rastrello remained on the seabed. The ship became a war grave, and is a reminder of the heavy losses suffered at sea during the conflict. The sinking of the Rastrello is also a historical event marking the role of Italian merchant ships in the Axis war effort and their vulnerability to Allied naval attacks.
