Thomas Collins (soldier)

Thomas Collins (c. 1732 - March 29, 1789) was an American planter, lawyer, and politician from Smyrna, Delaware. He served as the fourth President of Delaware during a period of significant transition in the newly formed United States, from 1786 until his death in 1789.

Collins' early life is sparsely documented, but he was a prominent figure in Kent County, Delaware, prior to the American Revolution. He held several local offices and established himself as a respected member of the community.

During the American Revolutionary War, Collins played a key role in Delaware's efforts. He served as a Colonel in the Delaware militia, leading troops in various engagements. His military service brought him recognition and further solidified his reputation within the state. He also served on the Delaware Council of Safety, responsible for the state's defense and wartime governance.

Following the war, Collins continued his involvement in Delaware politics. He was elected President of Delaware (a position akin to governor in other states) in 1786, succeeding Nicholas Van Dyke. As President, Collins faced the challenges of post-war reconstruction and economic instability. He also oversaw Delaware's participation in the Constitutional Convention of 1787. While Collins did not personally attend the convention, he was instrumental in appointing the Delaware delegates. Delaware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution under his leadership in December 1787.

Thomas Collins died in office on March 29, 1789. He is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Smyrna, Delaware. Collins is remembered for his contributions to Delaware's independence and his leadership during a critical period in the state's history. He is considered a Founding Father of Delaware.
