Frank Fleming (sculptor)
Frank Fleming (1940-2018) was an American sculptor known for his whimsical and surreal ceramic and bronze sculptures, often featuring animals, mythical creatures, and human-animal hybrids. He was a prominent figure in the Birmingham, Alabama art scene and his work is characterized by its intricate detail, playful nature, and underlying social commentary.
Fleming studied at Florence State Teachers College (now the University of North Alabama) and later earned an MFA from the University of Alabama. He established a studio in Birmingham and dedicated his career to creating art that challenged viewers to consider the complexities of human existence through the lens of fantasy and humor.
His most recognizable works include his series of "Storyteller" figures – part-human, part-animal beings that seem to be whispering secrets. He also created a series of bronze rabbits, each with unique personalities and intricate detailing, often found adorning public spaces in Birmingham.
