River Moy
The River Moy is a river located in County Mayo, in the northwest of Ireland. It is renowned as one of Ireland's best salmon fishing rivers. The river rises in the Ox Mountains and flows for approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) before entering the Atlantic Ocean at Ballina.
The Moy's catchment area covers approximately 800 square kilometers and includes several tributaries such as the River Deel, the Manulla River, and the Gweestion River. The towns of Foxford and Ballina are situated on the river's banks.
The river plays a significant role in the local economy, primarily through tourism related to angling. The River Moy is managed by Inland Fisheries Ireland, who are responsible for the conservation and protection of its fish stocks. Efforts are ongoing to address environmental challenges such as pollution and habitat degradation to ensure the river's long-term health and sustainability. The Moy Estuary is also an important habitat for migratory birds.
