Vespolina

Vespolina is a red Italian grape variety primarily grown in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. It is known for producing wines that are light-bodied, aromatic, and fruit-forward, with characteristic notes of spice, particularly black pepper. Vespolina is often blended with other local varieties like Nebbiolo and Croatina (known locally as Bonarda Novarese), contributing to the complexity and structure of the resulting wine.

The Vespolina grape is considered an ancient variety, with a history in the area dating back centuries. It thrives in the cooler climate of Piedmont and is relatively resistant to disease. However, it can be challenging to cultivate, with fluctuating yields from vintage to vintage.

The wines produced from Vespolina are typically best consumed young, within a few years of bottling. They are often enjoyed with lighter fare such as appetizers, pasta dishes, and white meats. Within the region of Piedmont, wines labeled "Colline Novaresi Vespolina" are required to contain a minimum of 85% Vespolina grapes. Smaller plantings of Vespolina can also be found in other areas of northern Italy.
