Detroit (1920s NFL teams)
During the 1920s, several different teams representing Detroit participated in the National Football League (NFL). The most notable of these was the Detroit Panthers, who played in the NFL from 1925 to 1926. Coached by Jimmy Conzelman, the Panthers compiled a record of 8-2 in their inaugural season, finishing third in the league. The following year, 1926, they finished 4-6-2. Due to financial difficulties, the team was sold and moved to become the New York Yankees (NFL).
Prior to the Detroit Panthers, the Detroit Heralds were briefly members of the NFL in 1920, but left after a single season with a 1-2-1 record. The Detroit Tigers (not affiliated with the baseball team of the same name) played in the NFL for a single season in 1921, going 0-6.
These early Detroit NFL teams played their games in various venues, including Navin Field (later Briggs Stadium and Tiger Stadium), which was primarily a baseball park. These teams, while ultimately unsuccessful in establishing a long-term presence in the NFL, represent the early days of professional football and the city's initial involvement in the league.
