Daskalio

Daskalio (Greek: Δασκαλειό)

Daskalio, meaning "little island of the teacher" or "teacher's islet," is a small, rocky islet adjacent to the larger island of Keros in the Cyclades archipelago of Greece. It is located southeast of Keros and forms a visually striking landform with it.

Daskalio is significant for its archaeological remains. Excavations have revealed it to be a site of early Cycladic culture, dating back to the Early Bronze Age (c. 3rd millennium BC). The islet was apparently a sanctuary, potentially dedicated to a female deity, and evidence suggests rituals and ceremonies were performed there. Archaeological finds include pottery, marble figurines, and metallic objects. The proximity of Daskalio to Keros, and the recovered artifacts, suggest a close relationship between the two islands during this period, possibly forming a central hub for Cycladic culture and trade.

The islet is uninhabited today, although its archaeological importance attracts researchers and visitors interested in the ancient history of the Cyclades. The finds from Daskalio and Keros have contributed significantly to our understanding of early Cycladic religious practices and social organization. The site continues to be studied to further elucidate its role within the wider Aegean Bronze Age world.
