Valdir (footballer, born 1937)
Valdir Joaquim de Moraes (born November 23, 1937, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, died January 17, 2020), commonly known simply as Valdir, was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is best known for his long and successful career with Palmeiras.
Valdir began his professional career with Renner before joining Palmeiras in 1958. He remained with Palmeiras for over a decade, becoming a key figure in one of the club's most successful eras. During his time with Palmeiras, he won numerous titles including the Campeonato Paulista (São Paulo State Championship) several times and multiple national championships, including the Taça Brasil and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa.
Valdir was also a member of the Brazilian national team, although he was often a reserve goalkeeper. He was part of the squad that won the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile, although he did not play in the tournament.
After retiring from playing, Valdir remained involved in football as a coach and administrator. He served as a goalkeeping coach for various clubs, including Palmeiras, and contributed to the development of many talented goalkeepers. He was considered an influential figure in Brazilian goalkeeping, known for his dedication and expertise.
