Double Arch (Utah)

Double Arch is a prominent rock formation located in Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah, United States. It is one of the park's most iconic and easily accessible features, known for its two massive arches sharing a common base.

Formed through water erosion and chemical weathering of the Entrada Sandstone, Double Arch is distinct from many other arches in the park, which were formed as fins eroded. Double Arch is a pothole arch, meaning it was created by water eroding the rock from above, rather than from the sides. This different formation process contributes to its unique appearance.

The larger of the two arches has a span of 148 feet (45 meters), making it the longest in the park and one of the longest in the world. The second, smaller arch also boasts a significant span.

Double Arch is easily accessible via a short, relatively flat trail from the parking area, making it a popular destination for visitors of all ages and abilities. Its size and accessibility also make it a favored spot for photography, particularly during sunrise and sunset when the light accentuates the textures and colors of the sandstone.

Double Arch has also been featured in popular culture, most notably as the backdrop for the opening scene of the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
