Avantivarman (Varman dynasty)

Avantivarman was a ruler of the Varman dynasty of Kashmir, who reigned from approximately 855 to 883 CE. He is known primarily for founding the city of Avantipura (modern-day Wantipora) and constructing several significant temples, most notably the Avantisvamin temple dedicated to Vishnu and the Avantisvara temple dedicated to Shiva, both located in Avantipura.

Avantivarman's reign followed a period of instability in the region. He is credited with restoring order and prosperity to Kashmir. His reign is also associated with a flourishing of art and architecture, as evidenced by the temples he commissioned.

Little is known about Avantivarman's specific military campaigns or political strategies. Most of the information about him comes from the Rajatarangini, a chronicle of the kings of Kashmir written by Kalhana in the 12th century. Kalhana portrays Avantivarman as a benevolent ruler who patronized religious institutions and fostered a period of peace and cultural development.

Avantivarman was succeeded by his son, Shankaravarman. The reign of Avantivarman is considered a significant period in the history of Kashmir, marking a period of stability and architectural achievement after a period of upheaval.
