Daniel Greene (artist)
Daniel Greene (1934 – 2020) was an American realist artist, known primarily for his pastel portraits and figurative paintings. He was considered a leading figure in the revival of representational art in the late 20th century.
Greene was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League of New York, where he later taught for many years. He also taught at the National Academy of Design. His work is characterized by its meticulous detail, skillful use of light and shadow, and psychological insight into his subjects.
Greene painted portraits of numerous prominent individuals, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Bob Hope, Sophia Loren, and presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter. Beyond portraiture, he also created still life and genre paintings, often depicting everyday scenes and objects.
He authored several books on painting techniques, including "Pastel, a Comprehensive Guide to Pastel Painting," and "The Art of Pastel Painting." Greene's work is held in numerous public and private collections, and he received many awards and honors throughout his career. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and the Pastel Society of America.
