Cri-Cri (character)

Cri-Cri is the moniker of Francisco Gabilondo Soler (1907-1990), a Mexican composer and performer of children's songs. He is widely considered Mexico's most influential composer of children's music.

Under the pseudonym Cri-Cri, Gabilondo Soler created a vast repertoire of songs, stories, and characters for children, often incorporating elements of Mexican folklore, animals, and everyday objects. His work frequently features imaginative narratives and moral lessons, delivered in a playful and engaging manner.

Cri-Cri's songs were originally broadcast on radio and later adapted for television, quickly gaining immense popularity throughout Latin America. Some of his most famous songs include "El Grillito Cantor" (The Little Singing Cricket), from which his pseudonym is derived; "La Patita" (The Little Duck); "Caminito de la Escuela" (Little Road to School); "Negrito Sandía" (Little Watermelon Black Boy) – though this song has faced controversy due to its outdated and potentially offensive lyrics; and "Los Tres Cochinitos" (The Three Little Pigs).

Gabilondo Soler retired the Cri-Cri persona in 1961 but his music continues to be popular and is considered an integral part of Mexican cultural heritage. His compositions have been covered by numerous artists and continue to be enjoyed by generations of children. He is remembered for his creativity, his dedication to entertaining and educating children, and his significant contribution to Mexican music.
