Rugsund

Rugsund is a former municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. It was located in the Nordfjord region. Rugsund existed as a municipality from 1838 until its dissolution and merger in 1964. The administrative centre was the village of Rugsund.

Historically, the municipality encompassed areas on both sides of the Nordfjord, including parts of what are now the municipalities of Bremanger and Vågsøy. The local economy was primarily based on fishing, agriculture, and some shipbuilding.

In 1964, Rugsund was divided. The area south of the Nordfjord was merged into the new municipality of Bremanger, while the area north of the fjord was merged into the new municipality of Vågsøy.

The name "Rugsund" is derived from the Old Norse word Rugsund, likely referring to a sound or strait associated with rye (rug).
