Coniston (Northern Territory)

Coniston is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia, situated approximately 320 kilometers northwest of Alice Springs. It is primarily known for Coniston Station, a large cattle station that played a significant role in the region's pastoral history.

The area is sparsely populated and characterized by arid landscapes, including spinifex grasslands and rocky outcrops. The traditional owners of the land are the Anmatyerre Aboriginal people.

Coniston is historically significant due to the Coniston Massacre of 1928, one of the last known massacres of Aboriginal people in Australia. The massacre occurred in response to the killing of a European dingo trapper, and resulted in the deaths of a large number of Aboriginal people. The events surrounding the massacre remain a sensitive and controversial topic.

Today, Coniston Station operates as a pastoral lease, and the area attracts some tourists interested in its history and remote location. Access to the area is primarily via unsealed roads. The economy is largely based on cattle production.
