Stephen Parry (Australian politician)

Stephen Parry (born 30 January 1960) is a former Australian politician who served as a Senator for Tasmania from 2005 to 2017. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served as the President of the Australian Senate from 2014 to 2017.

Parry was born in Devonport, Tasmania. Prior to entering politics, he worked as a police officer in Tasmania for 25 years, reaching the rank of Inspector.

He was elected to the Senate at the 2004 federal election and took office on 1 July 2005. He served on numerous Senate committees during his tenure.

In November 2017, Parry resigned from the Senate after confirming that he was a dual citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom through his father. Section 44 of the Australian Constitution prohibits dual citizens from being elected to parliament. His resignation was part of a broader citizenship crisis affecting several Australian parliamentarians. The High Court of Australia subsequently ruled on the validity of his election, confirming his ineligibility due to holding British citizenship.
