Nizhyn
Nizhyn, also spelled Nezhin (Ukrainian: Ні́жин, pronounced [ˈnʲiʒɪn]), is a city in Chernihiv Oblast of northern Ukraine, situated on the Oster River. It serves as the administrative center of Nizhyn Raion.
History:
Nizhyn is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, with its recorded history dating back to 1147, mentioned in the Hypatian Codex as Нежатин (Nezhatin). Archaeological evidence suggests settlements existed in the area long before this date. During the medieval period, it was a significant fortified town within the Principality of Chernigov.
In the 17th century, Nizhyn became a prominent center of Cossack life and culture. The city was granted Magdeburg rights in 1625. The Cossack Rada (council) often convened in Nizhyn. The Treaty of Nizhyn, signed in 1663, marked a significant moment in the history of the Cossack Hetmanate.
Throughout the centuries, Nizhyn was part of various polities, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire. The city prospered as a trading center, particularly known for its Greek community and its trade in tobacco and agricultural products.
During World War II, Nizhyn was occupied by Nazi Germany. After the war, it was part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Nizhyn became part of independent Ukraine.
