Coliseum station (Edmonton)
Coliseum station is a light rail transit (LRT) station located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It serves the Capital Line of the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS). The station is situated in the Eastwood neighbourhood, immediately north of Northlands Coliseum, a former major indoor arena.
The station's primary function is to provide access to events and attractions at the Coliseum (now known as the Edmonton Expo Centre), and the surrounding area. It is an at-grade station with two side platforms.
Coliseum station opened on April 22, 1978, as part of the original segment of the Capital Line. The station's design is relatively simple, reflecting its original purpose as a high-capacity transit point for event attendees.
Due to the relocation of the Edmonton Oilers to Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton, and the subsequent decrease in events at the Coliseum, the station now serves a more local purpose for residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods. Despite reduced ridership compared to its peak years, Coliseum station remains a vital part of Edmonton's LRT network, providing public transit access to the Edmonton Expo Centre and the Eastwood community. Future developments around the station are planned to potentially revitalize the area and increase ridership.
