Gorget

A gorget is a piece of plate armor or a decorative collar, worn to protect the throat. Its historical use spans various periods and cultures, evolving in form and function over time.

Initially, gorgets were simple pieces of metal, often iron or steel, worn under other armor components like the helmet and cuirass. Their primary function was to provide protection against blows to the neck area, which was a vulnerable target on the battlefield. These early gorgets were typically attached to the breastplate or helmet, offering a degree of movement while maintaining a secure defense.

As armor design progressed, the gorget became more articulated, often consisting of multiple plates riveted together to allow for greater flexibility. During the late medieval and Renaissance periods, gorgets became more elaborate and decorative, reflecting the status and wealth of the wearer. They were sometimes adorned with etching, engraving, or gilding.

The gorget's use gradually declined with the advent of firearms. As firearms became more prevalent and effective, the protection offered by plate armor, including the gorget, became less significant. However, the gorget persisted in some forms, particularly as a symbol of military rank or authority.

In some modern military and ceremonial contexts, a gorget refers to a crescent-shaped piece of metal worn around the neck, often as part of a dress uniform. These modern gorgets are primarily symbolic and do not offer any real protection. They are typically made of polished metal, such as brass or silver, and may bear insignias or emblems.
