West End Line (Brooklyn surface)

The West End Line was a surface rapid transit line in Brooklyn, New York City, originally built as a steam railroad and later electrified as part of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit (BRT) system. It ran primarily along New Utrecht Avenue, connecting the 36th Street station on the Fourth Avenue Line with Coney Island. The line provided local and express service, utilizing a combination of elevated structure and surface trackage. It was known for its grade crossings along New Utrecht Avenue, which were a source of traffic congestion and safety concerns. These crossings were eventually eliminated through the construction of an elevated structure to replace the surface portion of the line, completed in the early 20th century. Following this reconstruction, the West End Line became primarily an elevated railway, with only short segments remaining at grade. This allowed for faster and more efficient train service between Brooklyn and Coney Island. The "D" train currently operates along a portion of the route once used by the West End Line.
