Chris Barnard (author)
Chris Barnard (1939-2015) was a prominent South African author, playwright, screenwriter, and journalist, writing primarily in Afrikaans. He is considered one of the leading figures in Afrikaans literature of the late 20th century.
Barnard was born in Nylstroom (now Modimolle), Transvaal. He began his career as a journalist before dedicating himself to writing. He is best known for his novels, short stories, and plays that often explored themes of social injustice, identity, and the complexities of human relationships within the context of apartheid and its aftermath. His writing frequently questioned the prevailing social and political order.
Notable works include the novel Mahala, which focuses on the impact of forced removals under apartheid, and the play Pa maak vir my 'n vlieër, Pa, which deals with the relationship between a father and son and the challenges of communication. Other significant works include the short story collection Duiwelsbrood and the novel Moerland.
