Scion (role-playing game)
Scion is a modern fantasy role-playing game (RPG) published by Onyx Path Publishing. The game allows players to take on the roles of the Scions, the offspring of Gods from various mythologies. These Scions inherit divine powers and destinies, embarking on adventures that often involve conflicts between pantheons, dealing with monstrous Titans, and coming to terms with their own growing divinity.
Core Concepts:
-
Pantheons: The game features a wide array of pantheons inspired by real-world mythologies, including (but not limited to) the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Chinese, and Japanese pantheons. Each pantheon has its own associated powers, virtues, and divine agenda.
-
Scions: Player characters are Scions, the mortal descendants of Gods. They begin as ordinary mortals who discover their divine heritage and awaken to their inherent powers. As they progress, they gain greater abilities and responsibilities.
-
Titans: The Titans are primordial beings of chaos and destruction, often depicted as the antithesis of the Gods and the established order. They serve as the primary antagonists in many Scion stories.
-
Divine Powers: Scions wield a variety of divine powers, known as Knacks, Epic Attributes, and Boons. These powers are tied to their divine parentage and allow them to perform extraordinary feats.
-
Legend: As Scions complete heroic deeds and fulfill their destinies, they gain Legend, a measure of their growing renown and divine power. Legend allows them to unlock new abilities and influence the world around them.
Game System:
Scion uses a dice pool system based on Attributes and Skills. Players roll a number of ten-sided dice equal to their combined Attribute and Skill rating, aiming for a target number of seven or higher on each die. Successes are counted, and the number of successes determines the outcome of an action. The system includes rules for combat, social interaction, and the use of divine powers.
Editions:
The game has been released in different editions. The original Scion, sometimes referred to as "Scion 1e", was published by White Wolf Publishing. Later, Onyx Path Publishing developed and published "Scion 2e", offering revised and expanded rules, new pantheons, and a reimagined setting. Each edition has its own unique features and interpretations of the Scion universe.
Setting:
The Scion setting is typically a heightened version of the modern world, where mythological forces are hidden just beneath the surface. Scions often interact with both the mortal world and the divine realms, navigating the complexities of their dual identities and the conflicts between Gods and Titans. The setting encourages stories of heroism, mythology, and personal discovery.
